Covers, first 28 pages and final 2 leaves dampstained, rebacked with scrap paper With signature on front pastedown of Supreme Court Justice Philip Pendleton Barbour (serving 1835-1841). Barbour was also Speaker of the House of Representatives (1821-1823), and President of the Virginia Constitutional Convention in 1829. Barbour was appointed to the Court by Jackson, and left an enduring Jacksonian legacy on the Taney Court. He advocated for states' rights in New York v. Miln and advocated for slaveholders' rights. Ironically his arguments in Kendall and Cohens v. Virginia were cited in both the Dred Scott case and by Lincoln to suspend habeas corpus. --Wikipedia
