Children's board game.
Tokyo: Jitsugyo no Nihon-sha, , Meiji 44 [1911]. Rarely found complete with the counters intact One leaf (54 x 58.6 cm). Colour offset-printed paper sugoroku (board game). Text in Japanese. Slight wear to extremities, one or two marks; in lovely, bright condition. First edition of this children's board game ("sugoroku", rarely found complete with the counters intact, as here, which would usually have been cut out in order to play the game. This game was inspired by the first Japanese Antarctic expedition of 1910, led by explorer Shirase Nobu. Japanese children were besotted with the idea of the expedition and magazines and games such as this experienced great popularity. This particular sugoroku, published as a supplement to a New Year's edition of the magazine Nihon Shonen, features 48 stops in various cities, including Tokyo, Berlin, New York, and London.
