Conrad, Joseph
NOSTROMO
1904. A Tale of the Seaboard. London (and Bombay): George Bell & Sons, 1904. 16 pp ads dated August 1904. Original red cloth. First Edition, first printing, colonial issue. Cagle notes that although Harper's records do not survive (Harper published the domestic London edition), Wise cited the belief that a total of 3000 copies were printed, of which 2000 went to Harper and 1000 went to Bell -- in sheets, who then bound them up for the colonies, either in red cloth as here, or in red wrappers. It is noteworthy that Bell's ad catalogue is dated August 1904, although actual publication did not occur until about October 14th; possibly the colonial copies were shipped off to the far reaches of the globe before domestic copies were made available in Great Britain. This copy is in very good condition, with minor wear on the edges of the spine, a bit of speckling of the cloth, and a cracked rear endpaper. Although colonial copies should be numerically just twice as scarce as domestic copies, in reality they are much scarcer than that. Cagle A10a.2.
