Die wagerecht Lage während des Gleitfluges” in Illustrirte Aëronautische Mittheilungen
Strassburg, 1901. FIRST PRINTING. This paper by Wilbur Wright contains the first publication of a photograph of a Wright aircraft. This article and another also published in July 1901 (in Aeronautical Journal) “constitute the first aeronautical writings of the brothers to appear in print” (Renstrom, Bibliography of the Wright Brothers). The present German publication, however, “has the historical distinction of being the first illustration to appear anywhere in the world of a Wright aircraft” (Gibbs-Smith, Invention of the Aeroplane, p. 306). This volume also includes an extremely early illustrated article about controversial aviation pioneer Gustave Whitehead who claimed to have flown a powered aircraft in 1901-2, before the Wrights. This is a complete set of the four quarterly issues for 1901, in fine condition with the original wrappers. pp. 108-109. 4to. Four numbers, nicely bound in green cloth and marbled boards, preserving original printed wrappers. Photographic illustrations, plates, and maps. Fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
