Bradbury and Evans, 1846. First edition. Small 8vo. Red publisher's cloth decorated in gilt to front board and spine. Blind stamped borders. Aeg. Light yellow endpapers.pp.175. 2p advert. . Slight bumping to edges. Small split to back top hinge extremity minor bumping, small corner creasing to a couple of outer edge corners. . There is a long contemporary Christmas inscription to front free end paper a Christmas gift for 1846. The book was published on the 19th December so this book must have been purchased within a couple of days of publication. Obviously an early printed copy by the inscription and also by the fact that the Vignette title page is in the scarce 2nd state (ref Eckel). There are four issues states of the Vignette, this book is nearly always found with the fourth state vignette plate. This is the rare 2nd state Eckel, Todd's state C1 where the "D" in Bradbury is unbroken . In thirty five years of dealing I have had one other second state copy. I have seen one first state (London Auction and subsequently with dealer) and no third state. Of 41 copies in the Universities of Texas and Yale there are no copies in state C1. Bar slight far edge top creasing to couple of pages excellent tight and clean copy [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
