Joseph Adshead
Adshead's Maps of the Township of Manchester 1851. ( Very Large Scale - 80" to 1 mile).
Joseph Adshead, Manchester, 1848. Presented on 24 very large folded sheets each measuring 35 inches x 45 inches (890mm x 1125mm). Printed to the huge scale of 80 inches to the mile (1:792). The overall size of the atlas is 18.5'' x 24.0'' (470mm x 610mm). These maps of central Manchester show all the streets and thoroughfares and depict in much detail all the (recently constructed) railway stations and textile mills, manufacturers, pubs and taverns, market places, churches, coal pits and quarries, canals etc. For a comprehensive description of these maps, with illustrations, see "Manchester - Mapping the City" by Wyke, Robson and Dodge (Birlinn Ltd, 2018). This complete set is uncoloured as issued and carries the plate of George Winstanley bookbinder of Manchester (see illustration). The condition of the maps is very good and clean with only a few small tears. Each map is folded into four sections (a few with small extensions) and importantly each fold is protected with a linen strip on the reverse. The stout, large outer cloth covered boards bear the title in gilt (see illustration). Overall the boards are detached and in worn condition without affecting the contents. Large heavy item, overseas shipping at cost. Further images available on request. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
