MILLER, Philipp.
Abbildungen der nützlichsten, schönsten und seltensten Pflanzen welche in seinem Gärtner-Lexicon vorkommen.
Nuremberg A. W. Winterschmidt -1782, 1768. First German edition; 2 vols, folio (42.5 x 28.5 cm); titles with engraved vignettes, 301 colour plates, endpapers age toned but otherwise very fresh internally, contemporary boards with wear to spine and covers, title inscribed in ink to both spines. excellent example of a scarce German edition of Miller's popular dictionary for gardeners. This was a welcome publication for Continental gardeners who were trained in traditional French design but wanted to replicate the increasingly popular English style of formal gardens. Since this rising demand could not be matched by nurseries, plants were often sold under the wrong name. It was therefore necessary to have an informative guide which could be used to identify previously unknown varieties and avoid deception. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
