Hartford, CT: American Publishing Company, 1872. First American edition, first state. Leather bound. Very good. 591pp. Octavo [22 cm] 3/4 brown leather with pebbled black cloth over boards, raised bands, and a gilt stamped title on the spine. Marbled endpapers. Two frontispiece illustrations, and six inserted full-page plates. One leaf of publisher's advertisements at the rear (p. 592). The extremities are moderately rubbed. The front free endpaper is just a little torn at the head, near the hinge. BAL 3337. Zamorano 80, 18. Merle Johnson, pp. 13-16. With "premises- said he / was occupying his." Unbroken type (first word of first line of contents p. xi). "Eastern" on p. 330. Fully illustrated by eminent artists. A first edition, first state, of Mark Twain's personal narrative of his years spent vagabonding. The English edition preceded this American edition by just a few days. [Attributes: First Edition]
