London J. Harris Nov. 20. FIRST EDITION 1814, 12mo, 130 x 107 mm, 5 x 4¼ inches, original drab thin card wraps, printed paper label on upper cover: "Harris's Cabinet " at top, "One Shilling Coloured" below with space for handwritten title, a later owner has re-written the title over the original faded ink, engraved title page and 14 of 15 engraved numbered leaves, each printed 1 side only, LACKING IS THE FINAL LEAF 15 AND THE LOWER COVER. The final leaf now supplied in coloured facsimile (see image 5) and the lower cover neatly replaced at some time by a pink cover of the same period and weight (image 5). Each leaf has a large nicely hand coloured copper engraving with 8 line verse below telling the story. Jerry and Kitty court, get married and have a baby, then they tire of each other and decide to go travelling. Leaf 15 shows them on a boat and Jerry pushing his wife overboard to drown, probably considered not suitable for children by some parents, who thoughtfully removed and destroyed the leaf. No doubt many children would have enjoyed the grim ending. Spine missing, label lightly browned, early name and date on upper cover, some early writing inside cover and on back of title page, last line of verse on page 4 is trimmed off, contents clean and bright. A defective copy of an uncommon pretty hand coloured book (1 leaf in facsimile, lower cover replaced as noted). Moon No. 169; Osborne Volume I, page 58. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
Bookseller: Roger Middleton P.B.F.A. [Oxford, United Kingdom]
