Critical and Historical Essays, new addition published 1878. Ornate gilt decorated spine with 5 gilt raised bands , gilt lettered red and black morocco title labels and inner and outer dentelles. Marbled edges and endpapers. Vol 1: xxiv, 776 pages. Vol 2: xi, 820 pages. Vol 3 [essays]: vi, 855 pages. All three volumes have a previous owner's signature, dated 1881, overwritten by another owner, on title page above text. Foxing to flyleaves. Volume 1 & 2 both have some light pencil and pen underlining of text. Volume 2 has small chip at top of spine. Volume 3 has small chip to front edge of board. A superb example of polished tree calf binding and gilt tooling.
