Original hand-colored copper engraved map from around 1730 - size of sheet: circa 25.6 x 21.3 inches - in good condition. -- This is without doubt one of the most important foundation maps, of North America, published in the early to mid 18th century. It shows the details of important, radical changes in the strucutre of the interior of North America, while also challenging commonly held ideas of the continent's coastlines. Some of these concern California as an island, The Great Lakes, some specific changes in the interior of the continent as well as on the Northwwestern and Northeastern coastlines. The shape of the Great Lakes is changed based on information coming from the renowned Italian cartographer Vincenzo Coronelli. This is merely one of the reasons why this 1st edition map is highly important and valuable. The map also shows routes of explorers such as Gaeten and Mendana , Drake Cortez, D'Olivier, and points out the locations of various Indian tribes,such as the Apaches. This map corrects the error of the Western swing of the lower part of the Mississippi River, moving its mouth to essentially its correct position on the Gulf of Mexico. Furthermore, the Mississippi valley is more developed with the French settlements of d'Iberville at Bilochy and the forts at Bon Secours and St Louis.
