The War of the Worlds', UK first edition, first state with original handwritten and signed letter
Heinemann. Herbert George Wells (1898) 'The War of the Worlds', UK first edition, first state, published by William Heinemann. With 16 pages of adverts at the rear dated Autumn 1897 as called for. This comes with an original handwritten and signed letter by H.G. Wells. Condition of the book: at least very good. There are no previous owners' inscriptions inside the book. One bookseller ticket on the font past down as show. Slight shelf wear to boards commenusrate with age as shown. Usual discolouration to endpapers and pastedowns, but no foxing to page block. A lovely copy. The letter: One page on stationary addressed 47 Chiltern Court, Clarence Gate, N.W. 1, dated 3 October 1903. Folded twice. The letter reads: "Dear Mrs. Hind. | I would if I could but I have no power to do so. I know C. C (though our intimacy is much exaggerated) and he is particularly resistant to all instructions & recommendations. | All my good wishes | H. G. Wells". The identity of 'C. C' is unclear. In good condition with two folds, light creasing and handling wear. 'The War of the Worlds' is a timeless classic of science ficion and together with 'The Time Machine' and 'The Invisible Man', H.G. Wells' best known novel. It has been adapted multiple times for cinema, but perhaps the most iconic adaptation was for the radio in 1938 by Orson Welles when many listernes ran outside in panic as the story was presented as a news bulletin and people belived that Martians started to attack the Earth.
