This translation is by scholar, Dr William Smith. Complete with the folding map, which is in a relatively clean condition. vi is misnumbered iv as called for. With the bookplate of William Leake Esq to the front pastedown. William Leake was an English topographer, diplomat and antiquarian. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society. ESTC No. T145017. The ESTC notes that the translator of this work was William Smith. Smith was the Dean of Chester and translated many Latin and Greek works. He is also known for his translation of Thucydides' 'History of the Peloponnesian War'. This work is often regarded as a thematic continuation of Thucydides' work. A fascinating work, with a well preserved map of Ancient Greece. Only the 1685 translation by Newman precedes this work. Condition: In a full tree calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Patches of rubbing to the spine, with some loss to the backstrip. Work has previously been rebacked with the original spine laid down. Joints and hinges have failed with the boards detached but present. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spots. Overall Condition: Good Only. Very Good.
