Very good, in fact, stunning, condition. A small number may carry very minor abrasions but overall the collection are in fantastic condition. A rare treat to behold. A beautiful set of chromolithographic cards from the mid-19th Century related to the département and colonial territories of France. Each card carries delightful illustrations featuring quintessential local produce, the departement coat of arms and a notable inhabitant of the region. Furthermore 68 of the cards carry additional information about the departement on the reverse: Information such as the departement's rivers; its population; capital city; industrial and agricultural produce; historical facts and; famous people from the area. For example, we are told that the Département de la Dordogne is watered by la Dordogne, l'Isle, la Vezere and la Dronne rivers; it has a population of 489,850 people; among its produce are truffles, apples, tobacco, wines, pork, steel, cutlery etc; its chief town is Perigueux (pop. 24170); the historic fact is that Périgord, part of Eleanor of Aquitaine's dowry was once controlled by the English; Daumesnil and Fenelon are listed as the celebrated residents. Of particular interest are six cards with information regarding France's overseas possessions in the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific.
