Three Years in Tibet with the original Japanese illustrations.
Theosophist Office Madras, 1909. First edition. 8vo, ( 24 x 15 cm) with 63 text illustrations, 11 photogravures and one folding map, stamp to inner rear inner cover, slight browning and minor spotting, map with some small splits; publisher's original paper wrappers, spine ends very slightly chipped, piece cut from front free endpaper; all housed in modern black slipcase. This paper-wrapper edition considerably taller than the case-bound edition. A translation of papers originally published in Japanese newspapers describing a journey to Tibet through Nepal between 1897-1903 and a year's residence in Lhasa. The author was a Japanese priest and this was his first book in English. Kawaguchi Ekai was a Japanese Buddhist monk and the first recorded Japanese citizen who travelled in Nepal and Tibet.
