Remembrance of Things Past
New York: Henry Holt, Thomas Seltzer, & Albert and Charles Boni, 1922-1932. A rare full set of Proust's masterpiece, first published in France as A La Recherche du Temps Perdu and first translated into English by C.K. Scott Moncrieff as 'Remembrance of Things Past.' It was later revised in translation to 'In Search of Lost Time'. Complete in 11 volumes in the original cloth, matching but for Cities of the Plain which was published as a numbered limited first edition and bound in white and silver. Lacking dust jackets, except for The Past Recaptured which is unclipped, showing light shelfwear. All volumes are very good or better, with sturdy and square bindings and varying degrees of shelfwear. Swann's Way (two volumes), shows abrading to the titles on the paper labels, bookplate removed from flyleaf, a thin line of dampstain to flyeaf and shelfwear to board edges. Small dots on spine denoting the volume. Within a Budding Grove (two volumes) presenting as almost near fine with a trace of foxing to top edge of text block, softening to spine ends, and a bit of loss to paper label on volume two. The Guermantes Way (two volumes) in very good condition, with shelfwear and rubbing to boards, a bit of loss to the crown of volume one and volume two's rear flyleaf neatly removed. Cities of the Plain (two volumes) in near fine condition remaining clean and bright, with just a trace of rubbing. The Captive and Sweet Cheat Gone present with shelfwear and rubbbing to boards, a bit of loss to paper labels, and The Captive has been fit with neat metal corner reinforcements.
