Contemporary half calf with cloth sides, spine in compartments with gilt decoration to bands and top and bottom of spine, black morocco label to spine, marbled end papers, marbled edges. Engraved portrait frontispiece by Thomas Fairland from a drawing by C. J. Basébe. A little rubbing to the spine and at the joints, minor shelf wear to top and bottom of spine and tips, light browning. A very good copy. First edition of this scarce book that shows only 4 copies on COPAC. There is the ownership inscription of a member of the Bowie family on the first binder's blank. Kayat met the Bowies in Scotland and described them as "charming" (p. 357 - which has been dog-eared). Kayat felt compelled to publish this account of his life and travels after visiting England and discovering the difficulty that English people had trying to understand his background and the whole idea of "Eastern Christianity" more generally. Kayat describes his early life, his first trip to Europe as translator to two Persian princes, and his subsequent stays in England from 1838-1840 and 1843-1847, when he gave several lectures on theological matters and trained as a doctor. This pleasant and readable work is "[probably] the first work to fit [Edward] Said's designation [of an English-Language book written by and Arab]" (Hassan, Immigrant Narratives, 2011, p. 157). Kayat became a British citizen in 1846 and, after his departure from England in 1847, was made British consul to Jaffa.
