The Newe Testamente of Our Saviour Jesu Christe. Faythfully Translated Out Of The Greke And Perused By The Commandmente Of The Kynges Maiestie, And His Honorable Counsell, And By Them Authorised. (Bible. New Testament)
Imprynted at London: Richarde Jugge, dwellynge in Paules churchyarde at the figure of the Byble, 1552. 16mo. (11.5 x 8cm). Tyndale's version, Jugge's revision. This is the smaller of the two editions of 1552, the larger version in 4to being far more common (twenty six ESTC locations) as opposed to six for this 16mo. Lacking 4 leaves from the first signature of 10 leaves (though retaining the title with the woodcut of Edward VI), 5 leaves from the second signature of 8 leaves and the first leaf from signature EE. Hence 392 of 402 leaves. Leaf ZZ1 bound with recto & verso reversed. The first three and final three signatures (the volume collates in eights) slightly proud in the binding, some of these with fore-edges a little raggy & loss of a few letters of the side notes, but not the text. A few minor clean closed tears, but no loss of text. In addition to the illustrated title, and illustrated colophon (which has slight adhesion to fep), with 66 illustrative (of 69) half-page woodcuts. Bound in 17th C morocco with gilt decoration to the board corners & later paper label. The rear hinge split, but the board holding. Notwithstanding these faults, a very scare survivor, unusually complete for a Bible/NT of this date, the main body of the work in tight, clean & fresh condition. Presentation inscription on first fep, 'J. Calvert's the gift of Mr. Robt. Taylor, Kingston, Jamaica, 1797'. [DMH 100; STC 2868; Luborsky & Ingram I, 191-3]
