Nixon, Richard [Rose Mary Woods Association Copy]
The Memoirs Of Richard Nixon
Grosset and Dunlap, New York, 1978. Rose Mary Woods personal copy of The Memoirs of Richard Nixon, signed by President Richard Nixon. Thick octavo, 1120pp. Blue leather, decorative gilt title with raised bands on spine. All edges gilt. Silk end papers with sewn-in silk bookmark. Signed by President Richard Nixon on the limitation page, this being number 49 of 2500 copies for distribution. Laid-in document from Grosset & Dunlap noting that this copy (#49) was issued to Rosemary Woods. A fine copy with a unique historical association. Rose Mary Woods was the personal secretary for President Richard Nixon from his time in Congress, through the vice presidency and into his presidency. She emerged on the national stage during the Watergate scandal when gaps were discovered in the White House tapes. She demonstrated how an erasure like this could happen by stretching from one side of her desk to another. This maneuver became known as the Rose Mary Stretch and was met with skepticism. After his resignation, she followed President Nixon to California, but returned to Washington to work on Capitol Hill. She passed away in 2005 and a memorial service was held at the Nixon Presidential Library. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
