SOUTH. The story of Shackleton's last expedition 1914-1917.
William Heinemann. London. 1919. FIRST EDITION. 1st impression. Large 8vo. (10.1 x 6.5 inches). Illustrated with colour photo frontis, 5 maps, including one large folding, and 87 mono photographic plates. A very good copy with the page edges browned, as usual with this book, and the last few pages, the Index, with some chipping to the page edges, but well away from the text. Finely bound in recent full dark blue morocco, the spine with five raised bands, ruled, lettered and decorated with an illustration of the Endurance, all in gilt. Single gilt dot and chain border on boards. Top edge gilt. The original publishers dark blue cloth front board, with silver illustration of the Endurance, and the spine, both lettered in silver, are bound in at the rear. This first impression was printed on poor quality paper and is prone to browning. Overall this is a very good copy of this classic and fragile book in an attractive leather binding. [Attributes: First Edition]
Bookseller: Paul Foster Books [London, UK]
