[BETHEL, Slingsby.]
The Present Interest of England Stated. By A Lover of his King and Countrey.
London: Printed for D.B., 1671. London: Printed for D.B.,, 1671. Quarto (205 x 155 mm). Disbound pamphlet, earlier sew-holes visible in margins, top edge cut, others untrimmed. Contemporary inked inscription to final blank page. Lightly browned with some foxing. A very good copy. One of two editions, one in 34 pages, the other in 35 pages as here, without established priority. The republican merchant Slingsby Bethel (1617-1697) here advocates the advancement of overseas trade as 'the principal Interest of England', encourages the government to adopt more supportive policies, and implicitly criticizes Charles II for having not already done so. ESTC R5304; Goldsmiths' 1972; Wing B2072.
Bookseller: Peter Harrington [United Kingdom]
