VITRUVIUS (Vitruvio) Pollio Marcus.
Paris Jean Baptiste Coignard, 1684. SECOND PERRAULT EDITION. Edited and translated by Claude Perrault. Folio, approximately 435 x 290, 17 x 11½ inches, engraved frontispiece, 68 engraved plates, numbered 1-65, the 3 unnumbered have stars instead, 7 are double page, 81 text illustrations of varing sizes, head and tail pieces, pages: [18], 1-354, [16] index, last page blank, bound in full contemporary panelled calf, original spine relaid, gilt lettered label and gilt decoration to spine. Spine rubbed affecting gilt, upper hinge cracked at head and tail (3 inches), foot of lower hinge has a 1 inch crack but both covers still holding firmly on cords, corners worn with small repairs, upper corner of 1 page professionally repaired, nowhere near text or illustration, hardly noticeable, 2 small repairs to margins of 2 plates, not affecting images, but 1 just touching text on verso and affecting 2 letters, all easily understood, pale stain affecting half the image of 1 plate, all still visible, first and last free endpapers heavily browned, pale staining and age-browning affecting many margins of pages and plates, light offset from text to some plates, otherwise a very good copy. According to Petri Liukkonen, this text "influenced deeply from the Early Renaissance onwards artists, thinkers, and architects, among them Leon Battista Alberti (1404 1472), Leonardo da Vinci (1452 1519), and Michelangelo (1475 1564)."
