Engraved frontispiece and 5 plates by Du Guernier after Du Bose, engraved initials and head- and tailpieces, title printed in red and black. Book label of William H. Painter to the front pastedown. Lightly browned, sometimes a little closely cropped with minor loss to pagination on p. 21 and to plate detail for cantos 4 and 5, light soiling to fore edge of p. 40. A very good copy. First edition of The Rape of the Lock in its full form and as a separate piece; the masterpiece of Pope's earlier period, his authorship acknowledged for the first time on the title. A two-canto earlier version had been anonymously printed in Bernard Lintot's Miscellany, 1712. In four days 3,000 copies were sold, and the poem went through many editions, "tho' not in so fair a manner as the first impression" (Pope's letter to John Caryll, 12 March 1714, cited in Pat Rogers, The Alexander Pope Encyclopedia, p, 241).
