[Archive]: Integrated Pittsburgh Youth Olympiad
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1968. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. A collection of images and some ephemera documenting the 1968 Integrated Pittsburgh Youth Olympiad. The young athletes were assisted by professional athletes including Maury Wills, Connie Hawkins, and Jesse Owens. This archive seems to have been compiled by a newspaper and features contact sheets, typed captions, and official letterhead. Students participated in events such as baseball, track and field, basketball, swimming, and bowling, among others. Photos show clinics, children working with the professionals on techniques, and action shots of games. One of the photos from a baseball clinic reads, "first the lecture, the grip and the stance - the beginning of the baseball clinic." Other images show the Mayor Joseph M. Barr with a television crew and various athletes. One photo shows a group of girls playing baseball with a caption that reads "the Youth Olympiad program does not provide baseball for ladies - but they play anyway." Additionally included are a certificate of participation, official stationary, and an iron on decal. A pamphlet featured here describes the event readings, "the City of Pittsburgh was one of the first cities in the country to program a broad range of recreational activities for its youth during the year and especially during the summer...Now, the City had added a Pittsburgh Youth Olympiad sponsored by Jaycees and the Quaker State Coca-Cola Bottling Company, the Olympiad offers Pittsburgh young people some of the most complete and professionally-conducted sports programs in the cou … [Click Below for Full Description]
