Engraved allegorical title page after Francis Delaram, one double-page map, one folding engraved plate (often lacking) and 47 engravings in the text, woodcut headpieces and initials. Title, folding plate, and a few of the text engravings have been colored (at later date?). A^4 B-X^6. Folio (286 x 178 mm). Sandys' popular account of his travels in Turkey, Palestine, and Egypt--first published in 1615--was one of the central works on the region in the 17th century. This copy includes the often lacking folding view of the "Grand Signiors Seraglio from Galata," as well as the double-page folding map. The engraved title page is dated 1652 and reads "A Relation of a Journey begun An. Dom. 1610. Foure Books. Containing a description of the Turkish Empire, of Aegypt, of the Holy Land, of the remote parts of Italy, and Islands adioyning" Wing (2nd ed) S677; Blackmer 1484 (2nd ed); cf. Atabey 1087. Contemporary calf. Some chipping and wear to boards, scattered marginal soiling and a few stray stains, occasional pale dampstaining, engraved title nearly detached, loss to f.f.e.p., early ownership signatures to endpapers.
