DAPPER, Olfert
Naukeurige beschryving van gantsch Syrie, en Palestyn of Heilige Lant.
Amsterdam van Meurs, 1677. First edition. 2 parts in 1 volume. Folio. Additional engraved title dated 1678 (mounted on stub), title-page printed in red and black, some browning to text as usual, illustrated with 39 plates (29 double-page, 2 large folding), and numerous large engravings in the text, includes the plate of Solomon's Temple not called for in the list of plates, conteporary vellum, blindstamped arabesque to covers, rebacked, green morocco label, an excellent copy. Dapper, a Dutch physician and scholar devoted to geographical and historical studies, edited this work from accounts of various travellers, including many which are now very rare. The work is particularly prized for its fine illustrations, and went through several translations and editions but the best impressions of the engravings are to be found in this first edition. Atabey 324; cf Blackmer 449. [Attributes: First Edition]
