Venice: Giovanni Maria Bonelli, 1561. - Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) was a physician and historical writer, born in Como. He was patronized by Leo X and his successor, Clement VII, who made him Bishop of Nocera and conferred other distinctions upon him. Giovio wrote numerous historical and biographical works, and, though his works are not be taken as authorities, they give an important and rich picture of Italy in his time. Giovio died in Florence. Quarto. . [23]. [2, blank], 352 leaves. Text in italic and roman. Numerous woodcut historiated initials. Quarter contemporary stiff vellum over boards, gilt black morocco label. A little light intermittent foxing, light marginal dampstaining in first and last part of text. A very good copy. First edition thus. First published in a folio edition in 1549. BM STC Italian, 304.
