Printed for B.White, J.Robson, P.Elmsly, and G.Robinson, London, 1777. First edition. Large engraved folding chart. xviii, [2], 602, [2]; [4], 607 pp. 2 vols. 4to. Cook's Second Voyage. First edition of this account of Cook's second voyage, published several weeks before the first official account appeared. On this voyage Cook became the first to cross the Antarctic Circle; established that "Terra Australis," the hypothesized continent between New Zealand and South America, did not exist; and made extensive sweeps of the South Pacific resulting in the discoveries and rediscoveries of numerous islands, including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides and many others. Forster and his father, the naturalist Johann Reinhold Forster, were both aboard the Resolution. The elder Forster was supposed to write the official account but when terms could not be agreed upon and the offer was withdrawn, the younger Forster issued this account based on his father's journals.
