Spine ends professionally restored; light wear; else a near fine copy of a scarce title, made more so with the author's signature; only 4 copies located in online institutions; no copies at auction in the past 30 years. William C. Hunter was a long-time resident of Canton during the 19th century and he left entertaining accounts of what life was like in the great trading port before the upheavals of war. In these recollections, Hunter describes the commercial, social and domestic lives of the 'Fan Kwae' at Canton. "By the Chinese all foreigners were called 'fan kwaes', or 'foreign devils'".--p. 63.
