"The leading British writer of supernatural fiction during the Edwardian and Georgian periods" [Bleiler, p42]. Blackwood had published earlier stories in magazines, namely 'A Haunted Island' in 1899 in The Pall Mall mag, and 'A Case of Eavesdropping' in the same in 1900. The remaining eight stories are new to this volume, with the eponymous story being perhaps his best known from the collection. Ex-library with stamp to front pastedown, foxing throughout - mostly light, but heavier to first dozen or so leaves. Spine dulled, tips bumped. Spotting to boards.
