Prior to the formation of the Union of South Africa under British direction, the Transvaal colony was a land ravaged by the second Boer War and beginning again to prop up the gold mining industry of the area. This first edition book, edited by L. V. Praagh, offers a encyclopedic look at the history, geography, and topography of the colony as it stood in 1906 under British control, providing a comprehensive work of reference full of monochrome photographic illustrations and maps. Undated; dated from copac. First edition. Contemporary inscription to front blank end paper. 'The Transvaal And Its Mines' chronicles a land of gold made home by the British in a time of political unrest. Condition: Bound in original full morocco with gilt stamped decoration the front board. Externally, generally very smart, with some shelfwear to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with some handling marks throughout. Loss to the extremities of the first eight leaves due to water damage, professionally repaired with archival tape. Overall Condition: Very Good.
