Publisher's gilt-ruled green cloth, gilt vignette to cover, gilt spine lettering, brown coated endpapers, all edges gilt. Early ink signature of former owner on half-title. Light bubbling to cloth covers, gilt roundels slightly rubbed. Spine slightly darkened, minimal rubbing to spine extremities and corners. Binder's ticket of Burn & Co. on rear paste-down. A very good copy with the inner hinges quite sound. Supervised by Lewis Carroll himself, this is the first foreign language translation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland after its original 1865 publication. While many people considered the humor, verses, songs, and puns of the work untranslatable, the problem was solved by translator Antonie Zimmermann who substituted common German phrases for the English originals.
