Dickinson, Emily. (Henry Gartf Holt.)
Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1914. 1st edition, cloth spine with raised bands, paper covered boards. The first and only edition of this collection, issued in an edition of only 595 copies in the first printing (Myerson A5.1.a). A second printing of only 293 copies was issued the following year, 1915 (Myerson A5.1.b). Published with "The Editor's Preface" by her niece, Martha Dickinson Bianchi, who contributes an insightful fifteen page introduction. The present copy bears Henry Holt's signature, dated 1915, on the first FEP in pencil. Additionally, Holt has written drafts his own poems on the last three end pages with his own corrections and annotations, also in pencil. Henry Gartf Holt, after graduation from Yale in 1862, was the founder of the publishing house, Henry Holt and Company. The present volume shows gentle rubs to boards, including wear to corners. Additionally, light staining is visable to the spine and front board. Else, internally clean and fine. As suggested by the limited number of copies printed, copies of this title are rare in the marketplace. This particular copy, with the provenance of Henry Holt's personal copy and with his handwritten poetry drafts, is truly unique. One of a kind.
