London: Printed for R. Royston, book-seller to his most sacred Majesty, at the Angel in Amen-Corner, [, 1674. 12mo (150 × 85 mm), pp. [16], 268, [4] (adverts), engraved title vignette. Some light browning and thumbing. Contemporary black goatskin, all-over gilt patterned with cottage roof panels surrounded by four vine branch motifs, flowers and cornerpieces, spine in six compartments, gilt edges, marbled endpapers (the first with races of a removed bookplate. Spine slightly rubbed, but otherwise the gilt in exceptionally fresh condition. Contemporary title inscription: 'Reb[ecca] Hatton'. A popular series of sermons, maxims, and prayers composed by Patrick Simon, prebend of Westminster and later bishop of Ely, for his future wife, Penelope Jephson. It was first published the previous year. This copy, preserved in a superb gift binding in the 'cottage roof' style popular in the 1670s, bears an early female ownership inscription. Wing P379.
