Housed in a custom yellow cloth flat-back box. Ownership signature of Carolyn Cassady to front free endpaper. With photographs by William Webb and front cover illustration from a painting of Bixby Canyon by Emil White. First edition, first printing, hardbound issue, copy O of 26 signed copies lettered A to Z; presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Carolyn Cassady, ex-wife of Neal, "for Carolyn Cassady from Allen Ginsberg with Love and Respect - yr. 'Rolling Stone' conversation added truthful information on old love Neal - Dec 11, 1972", on the colophon; additionally inscribed on the facing page by the publisher and proprietor of Manhattan's iconic Gotham Book Mart, "for Carolyn Cassady - a Christmas greeting 1972. Andreas Brown". Ginsberg's inscription refers to an interview with Carolyn published in Rolling Stone on 12 October 1972, in which she discussed her ex-husband's sexual sadism and argued that those "enamoured of the Neal myth never knew and don't know how miserable these men were, they think they were having marvellous times - joy, joy, joy - and they weren't at all". Neal Cassady (b.1926) had met Ginsberg and the other Beats in New York in the 1940s and maintained close ties to them after settling in California. He was the model for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, as well as the character Cody Pomeray in Kerouac's later works.
