Using the revisions made by Fireside Poet James Russell Lowell, this handsomely bound work is the product of a renewed interest in the poetry of John Donne at the end of the 19th century. Donne (ca. 1572-1631) led the life of a dashing bachelor until his ordination as an Anglican priest, and his poems (like his life) run the gamut from the profane ("To his Mistress, on Going to Bed") to the sacred (the Holy Sonnets). Today, we know him as one of the most admired of British poets, but there was a protracted period of time in literary history when publishing his work was not thought to be commercially viable; for example, for more than two centuries--between 1669 and 1872--there was just one significant edition of Donne's works. According to the DNB, "it was the work of scholars and critics at the very end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries that saw a wholesale rehabilitation," and the present edition "went some way to providing a widely available text for the poems." Although James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) is perhaps best known for the satirical "Bigelow Papers" and "A Fable for Critics," he was also a great admirer of Donne and the present work is based on manuscript emendations he made to an earlier (poorly edited) edition of his poetry.
