[4], xxxix [i.e. liii], [3], 315, [1]; [4], 87 pages. Two parts in 1 volume. Contemporary calf; rebacked with later gilt-lettered spine-label. Light stains on half-title and title, clean white paper otherwise except for about some outer marginal fox-spots. generally sound otherwise. Frederick Davis armorial bookplate Macdonald 30a. A very few ink marks in margins. Eleven of the sixteen Satires of Juvenal are translated by writers other than Dryden, including Congreve, the poet laureate Nahum Tate, and two of Dryden’s sons. The translations are generally in iambic pentameter couplets, mixed sometime with triplets. Dryden’s fifty-three-page dedication is a pretty interesting essay on the history of satire, poetic style, and poetry in general. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
