Pale green cloth, leading and bottom edges uncut; spine and lower portion of the rear cover slightly discoloured; one corner very lightly bumped; endpapers a little tanned; scattered light foxing; an excellent copy with the (acidic paper) dustwrapper very brittle, heavily tanned, split at the folds and hinges, and a little chipped (now protected behind archival film). The book is in a custom-made quarter morocco slipcase and chemise. A presentation copy, inscribed and signed by George Bernard Shaw on the half-title 'To Claude Carton from Bernard Shaw. 20th June 1924'. The book was not formally published until five days later; the play, a dramatisation of the life of Joan of Arc, premiered on 28 December 1923 in New York. R.C. Carton was the stage name of actor-turned-playwright Richard Claude Critchett (1856-1928). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
