Southern, Terry and Mason Hoffenberg (writing as Maxwell Kenton)
Candy
Paris: The Olympia Press, 1958. First edition. Southern's erotic adaptation of Candide. First issue in green printed wraps with original price "1200 Francs" on rear cover, without later price overstamp. A Near Fine copy. Southern's modern update of Candide, Candy follows a naive young woman whose desire to help others leads her into a sexual odyssey that concludes with self discovery. A notorious rarity and one of several important works first published by the Olympia Press due to obscenity concerns in the U.S. (the publisher's other works include Lolita and The Naked Lunch). Candy was the basis for the 1968 cult Marquand film of the same name and featured on Playboy Magazine's list of 25 Sexiest Novels Ever Written. Near Fine. Near Fine.
Bookseller: Whitmore Rare Books [USA]
