Publisher's decorative brown cloth stamped in blind and in gilt, t.e.g. Corners bumped, head of spine worn on the first volume, rear hinge cracked in the second volume, scattered foxing in each volume. Second edition. Illustrated with a wood-engraved frontispeice in each volume and numerous in-text illustrations. 2 vols. 8vo. Attractive second edition of this perennial favorite first published in 1841, on a wide variety of frauds and follies including alchemy, the South Sea bubble, the Mississippi scheme, and Tulipomania. The Financial Times rated it as the second among the top ten greatest books on investment ever published. Since it was first published in 1841 it has seldom been out of print. Bernard Baruch wrote a new preface to the 1932 edition, stating that he was saved by it in 1929, getting him out shortly before the market crashed. Kress C5560 (for first ed.)
