Octavo, 591pp. Dark brown morocco, title in gilt on spine, decorative illustrations on cover with depiction of sword on front panel. Illustrations by Frederick Remington and other "eminent artists" of the time. Marbled end papers, all gilt leaf ends. Frontispiece portrait of Major General Nelson A. Miles with tissue cover. A scarce work in the publishers deluxe binding. (Howes M-595). General Nelson A. Miles served in the American Civil War, the Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War. When World War I began in 1917, the 77 year old general offered to serve, but was turned down by President Woodrow Wilson. He passed away in 1925 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetary.
