Augsburg: Johannes Schonsperger, 1519. Folio (13 x 8 4/8 inches). 116 fine woodcuts (of 118, lacking numbers 4 and 111) by Jost de Negker and Heinrich Kupferworm after Leonhard Beck (77), Hans Burgkmair (13), Hans Schdufelein (20), and others (title-page and a2 supplied in an early manuscript facsimile, a8, b1, N5 and blank P5 lacking, lower portion of r5 repaired affecting some letters on verso, D8 with small hole to last two lines affecting a few letters supplied in facsimile, P4 loose with light fraying to lower margin). Late 19th- century vellum binding of an antiphonal leaf (inner hinges strengthened, lightly soiled). Provenance: with the 19th-century engraved bookplate of Daniel Henry Holmes (1816 - 1898), "the King of New Orleans retailers"; the early 20th-century bookplate of John Wesley Warrington (1844-1921), circuit judge. Second edition, mixed issue with b2 and b3 corresponding with Panzer A and the rest of the book corresponding with Panzer B, first published in 1517 by Schonsperger. A line-by-line reprint of the first edition, and printed with the same distinctive type, which was created specifically for the work. The type was designed by Vinzenz Rockner, the emperor's court secretary, and the woodcuts, based on preliminary drawings approved by Maximilian himself, are the work of the great woodcut artists, Beck, Schaufelein, Burgkmair, and others.
