CASTAGNOLI, Gianni; Umberto ECO
80's Xerochromes
Milan: Franco Maria Ricci and Ge. Co. Fin SpA, 1979. Text in English, French and Italian. Square folio (12 x 12 inches). 63 color illustrations. Pictorial wrappers. Umberto Eco's foreword entitled "The copy as art" describes the artistic and social implications of the act of the reproduction, and the means by which Castagnoli made these illustrations. Using xerography - or a copy machine - Castagnoli took the practice beyond Bruno Munari's earlier experimentations, confirming "through his new colour techniques, that nothing could be more imaginative than this machine which seems to have been created for the sole purpose of reproducing as imprints plane surfaces ." The publisher Franco Maria Ricci notes that he dubbed these creations xerochromes when he first saw them. Castagnoli copied everyday objects like matchbooks, crushed drink cans, telephones, cigarette and food wrappers, but the book also serves as a fashion kaleidoscope, with images of ties, shirts, pants, and other pieces. An extraordinary journey into the realm of simulacra. A very good copy, the rear wrapper with soft crease at bottom, some light wear along edges.
