Setta Peak, Yui process book
Hoyeido, 1834. HIROSHIGE. Process book showing all 13 preliminary steps to the creation of Stage 17 (Setta Peak, Yui) of the Tokaido Road series, Edo: Hoyeido, undated. Oblong folio, print size including margins 15.25x10 inches or 39x15cm, tipped onto card stock measuring 18x12.5 inches, 27 leaves, card covers, cord-bound through punched holes, no text. Begins with the image from the key block and shows the progress of the print as new colors are added via 13 successive impressions, ending with the stunning final impression. Considered one of Hiroshige's most beautiful and important prints, this was released in 1834 with the first series of The Fifty-Three Stages of the Tokaido, which were way stations along the road between Edo and Kyoto. The young artist rocketed to fame on the strength of these prints. No. 17 "is among the best of the series, and it was reproduced in many different versions, some of which are much simplified in color scheme (Ichitaro Kondo, Fifty-three Stages, East-West Center Press, Plate 17). The present book wordlessly explains the effort that went into a luxurious, many-textured landscape print in the late Ukiyo-e period, with various grays, blues, yellows and blacks added separately, coming together in perfect registration for a magnificent image. This book is not just a teaching tool but a work of art. Apparently unrecorded, possibly the only copy in existence. Condition of this book: Key block print and a few others show toning and minor spotting, but most images fine. Some punch holes torn, covers heavily toned. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
Bookseller: Rarities etc. [Warwick, NY, U.S.A.]
