Benguella Railway. Plan and Profile of Railway from Lobito Bay to Kambove
[N.p.]: [S.n.], (Septr. 1914).. Irregularly shaped railway map and therefore difficult to measure but approximately 28.5 (extending to 55) x 417 cm with additional smaller addition flaps to the edges, dissected into 61 sections and mounted on linen, mostly rectangular panels but with smaller triangular panels to accommodate bends in the railway line, manuscript title to one end of the map, green cloth panels to both folded end sections, gilt lettered to one side which features the name of the engineering firms "Sir Douglas Fox & Partners" and "Sir Charles Metcalfe, Bart. Engineers", folds into matching gilt lettered cloth slipcase. Some wear to the covers, but sound, the map very good. Running from the Angolan coast to the the D.R. Congo town of Kambove, where it joined the Rhodesia-Katanga line, this was a Cape gauge railway built from 1899 onwards. Although Angola was a Portuguese colony these British firms were employed to manage its construction, having built numerous lines in Cape Colony and other British dominions. A map that would have had a limited print run, this is presumably one of the engineers' own copies. Only one other copy traced, in the British Library.
