BEARDSLEY, Aubrey; JONSON, Ben; ROSS, Robert;
VOLPONE: OR THE FOXE. With a Critical Essay by Vincent O'Sullivan. Together with an Eulogy of the Artist by Robert Ross.
New York: John Lane. 1898. First Aubrey Beardsley illustrated edition. First Aubrey Beardsley illustrated edition. One of 100 copies on Imperial Japanese Vellum. Later craft binding of full black morocco with multicolour onlay and gilt decoration. Marbled endpapers, binder's initials A. M. C. to the inner bottom edge of the upper board. Illustrated with a cover design, frontispiece and 6 vignettes [repeated in large size] by Aubrey Beardsley. A very good copy, the binding firm with a little lifting at the corners of some onlay pieces. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Scarce in this Imperial Japanese Vellum edition which contains an extra set of the plates in large size printed in photogravure. Limited to just 100 copies of which this is hand numbered 36. The book was also issued in a regular edition on art paper which was limited to 1000 copies for England and America. Commissioned to produce the artwork for Volpone in November 1897, with 24 illustrations including a frontispiece and decorative initials. Beardsley died on 16th March 1898 having only completed the illustrations included here. Ross's warm appreciation of the artist is an essential piece of Beardsleyana. Provenance: from the library of Martin Stone. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
