London: John Speed, 1626. Book. Very good- condition. Unbound. First Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. A repaired first issue of John Speed's map of America engraved by Abraham Goos in 1626. It measures 16 x 20.5 in (40.64 x 52.07 cm). The center crease, several tears, and several edges are reinforced and repaired on the reverse. About 12 inches of the edges on the back have been reinforced with clear tape that is not showing any acidic qualities. The bottom right corner of the map as well as the Groenland figure along the left border has been supplied in a well-done handmade facsimile. Beautifully hand-colored, bordered on both sides with 10 examples of indigenous persons, and on the top with vignettes of the eight largest cities in the Americas at the time. Bodies of water show ships and sea creatures. The first state of this iconic map..
