[Tokyo]: 臺紙閞舍寫眞製版印刷 (Shashin seihan insatsu), 1900. First edition. Hardcover. vg- to vg. Duodecimo. 7x 4 3/4". Leporello binding. Decorative cloth boards with floral designs, and a white paper label with black lettering on the front cover. Edges of book block in silver gilt. Decorative front endpapers. This remarkable photo guide book contains 48 individual vividly colored photographic reproductions, in double-page folded spreads featuring famous, important or picturesque locations and/or attractions from around the Tokyo metropolitan area. The book dates from around the turn of the twentieth century and the photographer is unknown. Images are printed on both sides of the pages, 24 on each side of the leporello binding. Locations and attractions include: Atago-yama (Mount Atago), Susaki, Tsukiji, Yoshiwara, Shogun's Tomb (Shiba), Kamiedo Bridge, Asakusa, Sumida, Ikegami, Ueno Park, Horikori Gardens (Katsushika), Sumida River, Ginza, Zojoji, The Ryounkaku (Asakusa), Asukayama Park, Sengakuji, Tokyo's Imperial Palace (including the statue of Kusunoki Masashige), The "Nippon Ginko" (The Bank of Japan) building, Nihonbashi, and the original Russian Embassy. It is interesting to note that a number of the buildings shown here are either no longer standing, or are no longer in their original state, many as a result of the great Great Kanto earthquake of 1923, which had a devastating effect on the Tokyo cityscape.
