Chapone, Hester
Letters on the Improvement of the Mind, Addressed to a Young Lady (1777) in EDWARDS OF HALIFAX BINDING
London: J. Walter, 1777. Hardcover. Very Good. So stated New Edition, 1777 (first published 1772). 8vo, full vellum with decorated gilt edges with blue fill-ins, and central circular handpainted picture of Leda and the Swan on the front cover and a harbor scene with cathedral and small sailing craft in an oval painting on the lower cover. VII (1) 238 pp, very good plus copy with most minor wear. Although not signed by the binder, has all the earmarks of an Edwards of Halifax binding. Also signed by Anna Maria Thornton on the title page; probably Anna Maria Brodeau Thornton (1775-1965) a prominent Washington DC socialite who rubbed shoulders with Martha Washington, Dolly Madison and Abigail Adams.
