Engraved architectural title-page. 31 illustrations. Head- and tailpieces. Decorative woodblock initial capital letters. 4to: a^6 b^8 c^4 A - Z^8. 20 cm x 14.5 cm. Period full vellum binding with hand-inked title to spine. Early 17th Century edition of a work that first appeared in 1596 (cf. Garrison & Morton 6144). Modest wear to binding. Old owner pencil notes to front eps. Old stain to lower right of each gathering's first 4 leaves. Withal, a VG copy. Item #32295 Per Garrison & Morton, "First Italian book on obstetrics. It is a work of importance for the study of the history of Caesarean section; in it Mercurio advocated the Caesarean operation in cases of contracted pelvis.".
